The New Patriotic Party (NPP) risks losing the 2016 general elections miserably should it go ahead to suspend its chairman Paul Afoko.
A lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School and a political marketing expert, Dr. Kobby Mensah said axing the beleaguered chairman will rather exacerbate the woes of the Danquah-Busia-Dombo tradition.
At the NPP’s 2014 national delegates’ congress, Afoko won with 2,034 votes whereas Kwabena Agyepong bagged 2,529 votes to become the party’s general secretary.
The Council of Elders of the party has officially written to Afoko to step aside.
A statement signed by the chairman of the Council of Elders CK Tedam and copied to the flagbearer of the party and former President John Kufuor said the conduct of Afoko is bringing the image of the party into disrepute.
“A thorough investigations into the constitutional breaches of chairman Afoko.
“Appropriate recommendation to promote discipline, peace, order, harmony and progress in the party towards election 2016.
“At least suspension of chairman Afoko from his office until after the 2016 elections,” are the three main reliefs of the Council.
Speaking to Kasapa FM’s Maame Broni, Dr Mensah noted the duo have strong following in the party and if the situation is not handled well it will agitate the numerous delegates.
He said the party will have to spend several months deliberating and defending its action in the media thereby taking the shine away from its campaign.
“Removing a party’s chairman at this dire hour will hinder the party from having the visibility needed to push forward its agenda in 2016 and it will unilaterally damage the party’s reputation and 2016 chances unless it thinks that 2016 is for JM [John Mahama] and that their prospect is on 2020, then they can go ahead and hound the chairman but if they have 2016 in mind, they shouldn’t contemplate,” Dr Mensah warned.
